UGC – Awards and Grants

UGC allocates maintenance and development grants to various universities and college-level institutions besides awarding scholars for their efforts in the education promotion.

UGC Grants       

At present, University Grants Commission  disburses grants to at least 16 central universities and 53 Delhi University Colleges of the country. Four colleges of BanarasHindu University are also the beneficiaryof the UGC grants besides the Inter-University Centres (IUC). The grants are provided by the commission through it 42 schemes, which are categorized under four heads:

  • Schemes for Colleges
  • Scheme for Individual Faculty members and Researchers
  • Scheme for both University and Colleges
  • Schemes for Universities

UGC  Awards       

The University Grants Commission (UGC) honors scholars, scientists and people who have done outstanding work in the field of education. The three awards presented by the commission every year are-

Hari Om Ashram Trust Awards: Hari Om Ashram Trust Awards were constituted by the commission in 1974 with the assistance of Hari Om Ashram Trust, Nadiad, to recognise the work of outstanding scientists. The value of each award is Rs 50,000, out of which Rs 10,000 is contributed by the trust.The various awards are as follows:

  • Meghnad Saha Award for Theoretical Sciences
  • Jagdish Chander Bose Award in Life Science
  • Homi J. Bhabha Award for Research in Applied Sciences
  • Award in the field Interaction between Science & Society
  • Sir C.V. Raman Award for Research In Physical Sciences

UGC Swami Pranavananda Saraswati National Awards:  

These awards are being given for the outstanding work in the field of environmental science and ecology, education, political science and economics and sociology. The commission has been awarding them since 1985 with the assistance of Swami Pranavananda Saraswati, Director of Yoga Societies in America. He made a contribution of Rs 5 lakh to the awards.

UGC National Veda Vyas Sanskrit Awards: The Veda Vyas National Sanskrit Award was constituted by the commission to promote quality teaching and research in Sanskrit. The award also recognizes the outstanding teacher by awarding him/her. The award carries a prize of Rs 1 lakh, which also includes citation.
