IMSC Chennai The Institute of Mathematical Sciences . In 1962 Chennai was founded by Alladi Ramakrishnan, a noted physicist and mathematician. IMSc carries out research in frontier areas of mathematics, physics and computer sciences. Government of India and Government of Tamil Nadu Research task at IMSc is well supported by Department of Atomic Energy. The board and academic council looks after the IMSc. In the areas of mathematics, theoretical physics and theoretical computer sciences the member of the institute works mainly.

Those students who wants to pursue a doctoral degree in the areas of mathematical sciences / theoreticalphysics / theoretical computer sciences, Chennai offers graduate research program. Besides offering graduate research programme IMSc also offers post – doctoral program and supports visiting scientists’ scheme etc.
IMSC have excellent Library and computing. IMSc also participates in a number of scientific research programs / meetings every year at national and international level.

IMSc – Programs
Graduate Students
(IMSc) Institute of Mathematical Sciences Those students interested in pursuing a Ph.D. degree in mathematics / theoretical computer sciences / theoretical physics, Chennai offers Graduate Student Program, Students having post graduate qualification in physics / mathematics /computer science or graduate degree in engineering can apply for admission into this program. Every Year the selection is normally made in the month of June. Students who have under graduate degree in science but have a keen interest in pursuing research in mathematics / theoretical physics / theoretical computer science can also apply. Such students get admission into Integrated M.Sc. Ph.D. programme.
(JEST) The admission to graduate students programme is made on the basis of Joint Entrance Screening Test, which is generally held in the month of February every year. This test is jointly conducted by 12 research institutes of the country. The notification for JEST is issued generally in the month of October / November every year.
The candidates who qualify in the JEST entrance examination can apply for any of the 12 research institutes.
IMSC Channai awards Junior Research Fellowship to all the entrants of Graduate Students Programme. These fellows also receives grant ranging from Rs. 8,000/- to Rs.9,000/-, together with hostel accommodation, medical benefits, and annual book/ contingency grants. Fellowships are awarded for a maximum period of 5 years and renewed, based on performance, at the end of every year.
Postdoctoral Research
Students with a PhD degree from leading institutions are encouraged to apply for Post-doctoral fellowships tenable for a period of one to two years. There are about fifteen post-doctoral fellows at the IMSc at any given time. Announcement for Postdoctoral Research position is made every year by the institute.
Associateship at IMSc
For college and university faculties, The Institute of Mathematical Sciences offers associateship and senior associateship programme. The Institute main aim of this programme is to actively involve and to make teaching faculties learn new vistas of science and technology which they will further pass on to learners. This program is basically oriented to attract upcoming generation in the field of mathematics / theoretical physics / theoretical computer sciences research.
Under this program, once or twice in a year , an Associate can visit the Institute. 90 Days Per Year a total stay is allowed. Normally duration of Associateship Programme is 3 years. For associate members Accommodation and allowances are also provided.
Summer Student Programme
Every Year in May- July Period IMSc conducts a Summer Student Programme .
Visiting Studentships
The students already registered with any university for their Ph.D. programme can visit IMSc several times in a year.
Visiting Scientists
The Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMSc) welcomes scientists all over the world to visit and work with the institute. IMSc is a part of the Theoretical Physics Seminar Circuit (TPSC) programme.
The scientists interested in visiting this prestigious institution, can write to the director@imsc.res.in stating their field, area of activity, and the duration for which a scientist would like to visit etc for evaluating the application.
