ANNA UNIVERSITY CREDIT SYSTEM RULES REGULATIONS applicable to the students admitted to B.E. / B.Tech. Full-Time Programme at various University Departments from the Academic year 2012 – 2013 up to Academic year 2014 – 2015 are as follows:

DURATION OF THE PROGRAMMES
The duration of the B.E. / B.Tech. Programme is 4 years (8 Semesters) but in any case not more than 8 years (16 Semesters).
Each semester shall normally consist of 90 working days or 450 periods of 50 minutes each..
Theory and practical courses
(i) General core courses comprising Basic Sciences, Mathematics, Engineering Sciences, Humanities and Management.
(ii) Core courses of Engineering / Technology.
(iii) Elective courses for specialization in related fields.
(iv) laboratory work, Workshop practice, computer practice, engineering graphics, industrial training, project work, seminar presentation, camps etc.
Maximum courses per semester
Curriculum of a semester shall normally have 7 lecture courses and max 4 laboratory courses. The total number of courses per semester shall not exceed 10.
Personality and Character Development Course
All students shall undertake any one of the programmes (National Cadet Corps (NCC) / National Service Scheme (NSS) / National Sports Organization (NSO)/ Youth Red Cross (YRC)) and undergo training for about 80 hours and attend a camp of about seven days. The training activities will normally be during weekends and the camp will normally be during vacation period.
Credit of Courses
Each course is assigned certain number of credits as follows:
1 Lecture Period per week is assigned 1 Credit
1 Tutorial Periods per week is assigned 1 Credit
2 Practical Periods (Laboratory) per week is assigned 1 Credit
3 or 4 Practical Periods (Laboratory) per week is assigned 2 Credit
2 Periods (Seminar / Project Work) per week is assigned 1 Credit
Industrial Training
The students are required to take Industrial training for a period as specified in the Curriculum
during summer / winter vacation. The student is allowed to undergo a maximum of 6 weeks Industrial Training during the entire duration of stud
TRAINING assigned number of credits as follows:
2 Weeks Training is assigned 1 Credits.
4 Weeks Training is assigned 2 Credits.
6 Weeks Training is assigned 3 Credits.

Industrial Visit
Every student is required to undergo Industrial visits for every semester starting from the third semester of the Programme.
Medium of Instruction
The medium of instruction is English for all courses, (except Tamil Medium batches of B.E. Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering programmes) examinations, seminar presentations and project / thesis / dissertation reports.
Anna University CBCS BE / B TECH Attendance Rule
The attendance of the student shall not be less than 75% course wise taking into account the
number of periods required for that course as specified in the curriculum.
The student shall be given exemption up to 10% on medical reasons (hospitalization / accident / specific illness) or due to participation in the College / University / State / National / International level Sports events with prior permission from the Chairman, Sports Board and Head of the Department concerned.
Candidates who secure less than 65% overall attendance will not be permitted to write the End-Semester Examinations and are not permitted to go to next / subsequent semester. They are required to repeat the incomplete semester in the next academic year.
FACULTY ADVISOR
To help the students in planning their courses of study and for general advice on the academic programme, the Head of the Department of the students will attach a certain number of students to a teacher of the Department who shall function as Faculty Advisor for those students throughout their period of study.
ASSESSMENT / EVALUATION PROCEDURES
Performance in each course of study shall be evaluated based on
(i) Internal assessments and
(ii) End Semester Examination.
THEORY COURSES
Theory Courses will be of 100 marks
(i) Internal assessments 50 marks and
(ii) End Semester Examination 50 marks.
The maximum marks for Internal Assessment shall be 50 in case of theory courses.
There should be three assessments, carrying 100 marks each shall be conducted by he Department. At least two out of these three, shall be written tests. The total marks obtained in all the three assessments should be given equal weightage of 16.66 each and reduced to 50 marks and rounded to the nearest integer.
LABORATORY COURSES
The Laboratory Course will be of 100 marks
(i) Internal assessments 75 marks and
(ii) End Semester Examination 25 marks.
- The maximum marks for Internal Assessment shall be 75 in case of practical courses. Every practical exercise / experiment shall be evaluated based on conduct of experiment / exercise and records maintained. There shall be at least one test.
- 50 marks shall be awarded for successful completion of all the prescribed experiments done in the Laboratory and
- 25 marks shall be awarded on the basis of the test.
THEORY COURSES WITH LABORATORY COMPONENT
The maximum marks for Internal Assessment shall be 50.
In this subject three tests shall be conducted.
- The first two tests (each 100 marks) will be from theory portion and
- the third test (100 marks) will be from laboratory portion.
- The marks of first two tests shall be given equal weightage of 15 marks each and the third assessment shall be 20 marks. The sum of these marks shall be rounded to the nearest integer.
PROJECT WORK
The Project work will be of 100 marks
(i) Internal assessments 60 marks and
(ii) End Semester Examination (project report evaluation and viva-voce examination) 40 marks.
Project work may be assigned to a single student or to a group of students not exceeding 4 per group.
There shall be two assessments (each 100 marks) during the semester by a review committee. The student shall make presentation on the progress made before the committee. The Head of the Department shall constitute a review committee for each programme. There shall be a minimum of three members in the review committee. The project Guide will be one of the members of the Review Committee. The total marks obtained in the two Reviews shall be 60 marks.

ANNA UNIVERSITY PASSING MARKS / GRADES REQUIREMENTS
A candidate will pass if he / she secures not less than 50% of total marks prescribed for the courses (Internal Assessment + End semester examination) and at the same time the candidate should secure a minimum of 50% of the marks prescribed for the end-semester Examination in Theory, theory with practical components and practical courses (including Project work).
If a candidate fails to secure a pass in a particular course, it is mandatory that he / she shall register and reappear for the examination in that course during the next semester when examination is conducted in that course. It is mandatory that he / she should continue to register and reappear for the examination till he / she secures a pass.
The internal assessment marks obtained by the candidate in the first appearance shall be retained and considered valid for all subsequent attempts till the candidate secures a pass. However, from the 3rd attempt onwards if a candidate fails to obtain pass marks (Internal Assessment + End Semester Examination) then the passing requirement shall be as mentioned below.
The candidate should secure a minimum of 50% marks prescribed for the course in the university END Semester Examination alone.
A candidate can apply for revaluation of his/her semester examination answer paper in a theory course, within 2 weeks from the declaration of results, on payment of a prescribed fee along with prescribed application to the ACOE through the Head of Departments. The ACOE will arrange for the revaluation and the results will be intimated to the candidate concerned through the Head of the Department. Revaluation is not permitted for project work.
AWARD OF LETTER GRADES
All assessments of a course will be done on absolute marks basis. However, for the purpose of reporting the performance of a candidate, the letter grades, each carrying certain points, will be awarded as detailed below:

The range of marks for each grade is decided at the respective class committee meetings.
‘U’ denotes Reappearance (RA) is required for the examination in that particular subject (This grade will figure both in Mark Sheet as well as in Result Sheet)
‘W’ denotes withdrawal from the particular course.
‘SA’ denotes shortage of attendance and hence prevented from writing end semester examination. ‘SA’ will appear only in the result sheet.
